About Paroxetine A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), Anti-depressant. Mechanism of Action of Paroxetine Paroxetine blocks the re-uptake of neurotransmitter Serotonin from the synapse in to the presynaptic nerve terminal in the CNS. This will prolong the action of Serotonin (5HT) and it is useful in the treatment of depression. Indications for Paroxetine 1. Depression 2. Obsessive compulsive disorder 3. Panic disorder 4. Social anxiety disorder Interactions for Paroxetine Monoamine oxidase inhibitors: Avoid concomitant use since serious, sometimes fatal reactions have been reported. Paroxetine hydrochloride should not be used in combination with a MAOI, or within 14 days of discontinuing treatment with MAOI. Warfarin: Concomitant administration should be undertaken with caution. Drugs affecting hepatic metabolism: The metabolism and pharmacokinetics of paroxetine may be affected by the induction or inhibition of drug metabolizing enzymes.
