About Propofol A short-acting, intravenous hypnotic, General Anesthetia(Intravenous induction agent). Mechanism of Action of Propofol It excites inhibitory and inhibits excitatory synapsis by binding ligand-gated ion channels specially post-synaptic GABA receptors. It cause CNS depression and calcium channel mediated cardiac depression. Indications for Propofol 1. Induction/maintenance of anesthesia 2. Conscious sedation Interactions for Propofol Opioids, muscle relaxants / neuromuscular blockers: Increased anaesthesia, increased respiratory depression (opioids), increased neuromuscular blockade. Midazolam, thiopental, fentanyl: Increased hypnosis. Nitrous oxide, halothane, isoflurane: Decrease dose.
